Ash Wednesday

Today, March 1st, is the start of Lent! 40 days that we make a commitment to cut out the unhealthy and ungodly things in our lives, and replace them with ways to seek and honor God's presence. The last few days I have been praying and seeking what I need to fast. Early this morning it became clear to me what I should do for these forty days. My largest struggles in general are glutton and finances.
I love food! I love it too much! I struggle with self control; I eat too much and don't pay attention to what I'm eating. So, I am going to basically start with a Daniel Fast and work backwards to what else I can have. For instance, I am going to allow meat and my diet coke for starters.
Last Thursday I started Financial Peace University for the second time. Two things stood out to me in that first video. 1) Do I control my money or does it control me?  2) Dave Ramsey told the story that someone came to him and said that by they time they get to the end of their budget they have no money left to tithe, and Dave said to him that he had his budget upside down. I feel like my money controls me. Don't get me wrong, I am implementing FPU and huge changes have happened in our lives. But I still feel like I'm living around our finances and it sucks. Then, when he Dave told the guy he had his budget upside down I had shell shock. This morning I just knew in my heart that God is asking me to trust Him with my money! I have been making steps, but this morning I committed to tithe 10% for the duration of Lent. I know, it's only four Sundays but I have to start somewhere.
I also set an alarm on my phone and pulled out a fresh journal that I will make purposeful, dedicated time to journal with God every day! I am excited about this! Two weeks ago I found my journal that I started after I was baptized full of my new spiritual discoveries and realizations. I missed that. I am going back to giving my hand to God. I am amazed at what he does with my open heart and a pen in my hand.

Tonight I also did something new:
I attended my first Ash Wednesday service!

All things God always come full circle and this service finished what started this morning. Ash Wednesday kicks off the start of Lent, yes. Lent though is a 40 day walk with Christ. A walk that asks us to examine the sin we've accumulated in our lives. The whole purpose Christ went to the cross was to pay for our sins. We are to live as joyous, redeemed Christians, but we should take this time each year to truly examine what sin crept in to our habits/lives. I had yet to realize that depth of Lent. It is the time to realize what Christ died for.
I felt harsh on myself this morning for using the term glutton, but in light of tonight's service I needed to take that serious step back and look at what has crept in.

Patriotism

It is our duty to pray for our leaders! (1Timothy 2:1-2)

I do not want to know who you voted for. It does not matter anymore.

Today is Inauguration Day for the United States of America.

That means that at 12pm today our 45th President was sworn in to office. Our country has a new leader and with that they all need our prayers!

I will admit, I do not understand all these protests and riots. There is a difference in standing up for a cause and outright disrespecting our nation. That is all these protests and riots are doing. If they were honest in their intentions about wanting the best for our country then they would not do this. The bottom line is they are disrespecting of our Nation, our Constitution, and our way of government.

Our country has fought segregation of all kinds for so long. Is this what America has become? A country bent on division and segregation at all costs?

Now we stand together. Whether that is praying, keeping our mouths quiet, and/or keeping our social medias quiet. No one wants to be known as the boy who cried wolf. Otherwise when the time comes to give your input it won't matter because people won't want to hear you. Be kind, be wise, and above all stop hating. Hate has never got anybody anything.

Mother's Day Blessing!

This morning I went to my sister's church.
I cannot express how excited I was about today!! I have been waiting all week!
Today, my baby sister dedicated her boys!!!

My heart just bursts with pride and joy for her.
I'm still praying through the issues I have about this holiday, but today was not for me. Today was truly about my sister! She took a huge step today, and I was so honored to be there with her and see it. I was saddened that our family wasn't there, but my son and I were! The way her church handled dedication, and just their service in general was awesome this morning and an honor! At the end they invited the church leaders and anybody to approach the parents and children to pray over them. It took me a nanosecond to decide that I was heading up there! My sister is a good momma to my two super adorable nephews and I thank God that she has found a good man to step up and be there with her, and that she is putting her foot forward! All I ever wanted for her was peace, love, and happiness! I should not have been surprised, but she picked the most perfect motto and verse for her family! Stay #ontarget little love you got this!!!

There is something that I want all mothers out there to know:

You are worthy,
You are enough,
You are tired
-that is ok,
I love you,
God loves you,
God is proud of you,
The struggle is real,
Stand tall,
Don't give up,
Don't let defeat win,
Sometimes our only true calling is the little person we are raising- just like Mary!

National Day of Prayer

What are you praying for today?

Today is the 65th Annual National Day of Prayer. Today we pray for our nation! Today in your prayers give thanks for the men and women who pushed and supported this bill!

You should do yourself a favor and go check out their website: nationaldayofprayer.org
I learned a lot of amazing information this week going through their website. For example, every year they have a theme and verse. This year's verse is Isaiah 58:1a (NIV) "Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet." What a perfect verse! Also, on Thursday, May 8, 1988, Ronald Reagan signed into law Public Law 100-307 the designation of the first Thursday in May as the annual observance for the National Day of Prayer! Then, Bill Clinton signed into law - Pub. L. 105-225, August 12, 1998, 112 Stat. 1258: The President shall issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National Day of Prayer on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals.

Something that hurts me as a Christian is that non-Christians assume "separation of Church and State" means to abolish "church." I find it hilarious that if they only knew that Baptists came up with "freedom of religion." Our once great nation was founded by Godly men on Godly principles. Men who prayed before making decisions about our country. Men who actively sought God's Will in our the leading of our country. A good book (so I'm told-it's on my TBR list) to read is The Jefferson Lies. It's about exposing the lies people have perpetuated about Thomas Jefferson. I pray one day we get back to that place in our nation.

So today at noon I will kneel with millions of people in
prayer for our nation! May God Bless us.

Céad Míle Fáilte

"A hundred thousand welcomes."

It is my second, or maybe my third, favorite holiday!
17 days in to March and I am finally posting- miracles happen!
I am super excited about everything that is getting ready to happen!

Two weeks ago I wrapped up another class for CLI! (WOOT!) I loved that class- Youth and Young Adult Ministries! The entire class I could just feel God pushing me and saying "go do it Kelli!" So I took inspiration from class and put together a skit that my youth group is going to perform for Palm Sunday!!! It is called "We Want Barabbas" and it is Barabbas's point of view from Mark 15:6-15.
I am super excited about it, but I have to tell you they certainly taught me a lot the past two weeks. Tonight we are meeting for the third time (ever!) and this will be our last rehearsal before Sunday. When I wrote the skit it broke my heart. My passion for God and writing really met in this skit. I was-still am- scared that it means more to me than the teens right now. I am accepting that that is ok. It is the way of it.

Then tomorrow night we are all going to Winter Jam!!!! I am so kick-butt excited about it!
I will have a full review up asap!

Valentine

There is always something cheesy about Valentine's Day, but it's truly a day to sit down and think about the ones you love and who loves you. I am blessed by my husband. He has made me a stronger woman. I am following our American Baptist Home Mission's instagram photo challenge for Lent. Today's word was Covenant...

We have a great covenant with our Lord. It was given to us through the greatest love letter ever written (Bible). Today is an amazing day to take in the love of our savior. To know that one man gave his life so that I may live. That is true love. That is a love I never want to take for granted. I cannot see my Bible as anything other than God's love letter to me. He wants me to know what I have been given. I have been given a history, a story about mine and his relationship from the very beginning to the very end. Isn't that what every girl dreams of?

~Mardi Gras~

Who would guess that Mardi Gras is a church holiday?!?

Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday.
In England it's called Shrove Tuesday derived from shrive; meaning "confess."

In case you didn't notice by my background I am kind of excited about it. Not only is it my two favorite colors (purple meaning justice and green meaning faith), but it's about eating! Fat Tuesday is about celebrating the day before Ash Wednesday- the day Lent starts! Fasting doesn't seem to be a common practice anymore, but tradition stands that you we are to fast during the Lenton season. So Fat Tuesday turned into a celebration of having the last feast of "sweets and fats" before fasting and prayer.
Did you know in Ireland they celebrate the entire week before Ash Wednesday. They call it Shrovetide, and their special thing is pancakes- PANCAKES! Which thanks to the brilliance of my son we are having our own party at home tonight. We will be making purple and green chocolate chip pancakes, and bacon!
Like all things in America, we have turned an at one time acceptable holiday into a week of alcohol and flashing. For a Christian to admit they are participating in Mardi Gras would turn heads. Speaking of I saw the coolest article in the local paper Sunday: a church in another town is having a Mardi Gras night! They are having a jazz band and serving pancakes/waffles! That is what I want for the church I am meant to lead!

Speaking of the Lenten season though... I will be fasting this year!!
I am super excited!!!!!

When I did my first fast for Lent it was three years ago. I was so healthy and happy! The mountain top of being with God was amazing! God has been leading me into this for a while now. I will be doing a Daniel fast, but allowing chicken occasionally at my dinner meals for closeness with my husband. Also, this year for my fast I am pre-arranging a "pass" for dinner on my son's birthday and for Valentine's Day dinner with my husband! I have two major things I will be praying for during my fast: the youth ministry of our church and a very personal matter. I am very excited to say that I took an idea out of this book I am reading and have invited three very close women to join me for dinner once a week through Lent to help in prayer. I am so excited about these dinners!! It's not just for me, but so I can be there for them as well.

I encourage you all to party with pancakes and wear PURPLE, green, or gold today! Please take a minute and pray. Ask God what needs prayer this Lent? What do you need to put down?

PRAY: **Lord, please help me to grow closer to you! This Lent we take a journey to follow you to the cross. You laid down your life for mine. Show me what in my life needs to be laid down so I can follow more closely. Is it my social media, my anger, an unhealthy activity/hobby, or my attitude? Lent is more than just eating a special diet, it is about praying honestly and frequently so I can hear you Lord! Bless my endeavors this Lent and all your believers, Amen.**

Christmas calling....

"Hello, this is Superstore how can I help you?"
.....
"Return department? I can help you with that. What do you need to know?"
.....
"You want to return the frankincense and myrrh, but keep the gold? Do you have your purchase receipt?"
.....
"Oh, they were gifts... You also want to return love and mercy, but keep the forgiveness..."
.....
"I see. I am sorry ma'am if it was purchased from here it has a 'no return policy' and was literally bought with everything He has."
.....
"I am sorry you have no use for them, but I pray you find one for the Giver's sake."

People want the gold and forgiveness from God, but don't know how to do with everything else...

My Greatest Blessing!

This was my absolute favorite picture of my son until last night!
From the moment I had my son I knew I had something special. The first time my Pastor held him she said that he was anointed. I will admit to praying for a little girl during my pregnancy. (The relationship I have with my father is one that I wanted for my husband so badly. I thought it would help heal his heart.) With every little thing though God once again proved that he knew better. The mother-son relationship has saved me more than I can count, and he's only four! My son was a straight miracle delivered into my hands by God, and I will never forget that!

Following my call into ministry my husband was afraid that our son would have "religion" forced upon him growing up. That has never happened. My son loves God and church so much that it makes me feel inadequate sometimes. God uses my son in so many ways. During my pregnancy with Connor I was the healthiest I had ever been since being diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic. That should have been my first sign of the blessing I was about to receive. When I have had a bad day Connor will out of the blue start singing some of our favorite Christian songs! Below is his favorite song "My Savior My God," by Aaron Shust.
"My Savior loves, My Savior lives
My Savior's always there for me
My God: He was, my God; He is
My God is always gonna be"

Connor's favorite place to be is in church. He loves Sunday mornings, and we actually pass our church on the way to work/daycare everyday so he is always asking to stop there on the way home just to visit it.
Thanksgiving made two years for us in our home. I know a handful of people in our small town from when I was little and my school friends lived here. I have another handful that I have made in our two years here from being a "regular" and church attendee. Two weeks ago on our way home Connor was ooh'ing and ahh'ing over the Christmas lights that people in town had up. After the third night he said that he wanted to take his dinosaur cards and give them to everybody who put up lights. I loved the idea and that he is always thinking of appreciating others. So this momma, as of yesterday, has written 32 Christmas/thank you cards, and we have made four trips through town to pass out cards to every house with Christmas decorations! I could not be a prouder mom! Last night on our last trip I got this amazing photo of him and it has become my new absolute favorite!

I just can't thank God enough for the joy and blessings he brings into my life!

Mary, did you know?

The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with god. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end."
"How will this be, " Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"
The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail."
"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled." Then the angel left her.

One of my favorite Christmas songs is "Mary, did you know?", and
my favorite version is by Pentatonix.

Maybe it touches me differently now because I am a mother...
Either way, every time I listen to the lyrics I cannot help but wonder "Mary, did you know?"

Mary, did you know that "when you kiss your little Baby you kissed the face of God?"
That every mother holds their newborn and can only imagine how they will change the world.
"The sleeping Child you're holding is the Great, I Am."

"This Child that you delivered will soon deliver you."
"Did you know that your Baby Boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?"
Did she know that she would have to watch her son die?

Think on the verses from Luke that the angel said to Mary.
"Son of the Most High," "God will give him the throne," and
"his kingdom will never end."
She knew.
The pain, and in the end the absolute Glory of her child... she knew.

Mary, did you know that your child's birth would become about getting the best deals?
Listen to this miraculous song and start thinking about how we treat the Advent season...

These three photos say more about Christmas than anything else today.
Christmas is... celebrating the birth of our Savior and the sacrifice of the perfect Lamb!

My sad moment happened when we came home from Ohio. While there with my husband's family I bought my son a Fisher Price Little People Nativity and when we got home I gave it to him to set up and play with. He didn't know what it was! Talk about fail-mom moment, but I got to turn it into a learning experience for the both of us!

Just never forget... Mary did know!

Thanksgiving

 'Tis the Season!

I have never traveled for the holidays. My family is centrally located, so to say. My husband is originally from Ohio, and that is where all of his family is; except his parents. I got to do the best thing this year and planned Thanksgiving in Ohio. We took an off year from basically my family and we stayed the weekend with his Aunt, Uncle, cousins, so many second cousins, lol.
Anyway, last weekend in Ohio reminded me what it is like to have all the family together for a giant dinner, and the hours of catching up. I missed it. I didn't realize this was something I needed as well. I loved the idea of packing up and visiting the family. I missed watching the Macy's Day Parade while fixing dinner, the family falling asleep on the couch after all the eating and talking, and taking Friday to go do something together to ring in Christmas!

The thing I wasn't planning on was that it would mean so much to me. That almost sounds bad, but it's not. My parents divorced right before Thanksgiving five years ago. The holidays have been hard ever since. I was just married and we were trying to figure out how to balance both of our families for the holidays, and then my side just doubled. I was raised very close to my family and multiple holidays for everybody's side because they can't act like adults is very hard. Let alone my family outweighs my husbands, and now we have a feeling of somebody's is more important than the others.
If you are ever in Akron, Ohio you need to go see Stan Hywet Hall!!!

After dinner Thursday my husbands' cousin, Angie, asked what we wanted to do. I am a pinterest-er and said that I found there was a castle around here and would love to go see it.  Angie said I have the perfect place and they should be decorated for Christmas.
As you can see below they go all out for Christmas time! The place was beautiful and we had so much walking around looking at the lights and house. The house was built by F.A. Seiberling, the creator of Goodyear Tire & Rubber! There was a slow drizzle all night, but it didn't stop the fun of all the kids; even us big ones. Angie and I were like kids in a candy store. I truly had an amazing time with my family.

Father's Day

Ephesians 3:14-15
"For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and of earth is named..."

The dictionary's definition of father is: a male who exercises paternal care over other persons.
My definition of father is: someone who taught me honesty, courage, and strength; someone who taught me the meaning of work, family, and faith; finally but not last, someone who stood beside me in everything and reminded me it's all about one day at a time.

I know that on this day we celebrate our fathers, but sometimes two words mean more than anything else: Thank-you! Thank you for every minute and lesson you gave to me. No matter how hard it was on you, because we grew together didn't we?
And, honestly, I think George Strait said it best:

Last night I dreamed I died and stood outside those pearly gates.
When suddenly I realized there must be some mistake.
If they know half the things I've done, they'll never let me in.
And then somewhere from the other side I heard these words again.
And they said, "Let me tell you a secret about A Father's love,
A secret that my daddy said was just between us.
You see Daddy's don't just love their children every now and then.
It's a love without end, amen, it's a love without end, Amen."

Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful women out there raising kids
(whether they be fur-babies or humans, lol).

Personally, Mother's Days have always had a sad tune for me. Whom I would consider my mother is my Grandmother. She was there for me in the years that really mattered in my development. I have some really good memories of my mom prior to when we moved in with my grandparents, but it is really hard to profess love to my mother when she really shut me down growing up. I am praying and working through it, but days like today leave me wishing I had something I could say about my mother.
My greatest fear growing up was being exactly like my mom, and treating my kids how I was treated. I struggle with that everyday with my son. It's a blessing in a way, I am so conscious of what I do with him and how I treat him.
I am not accustomed to praise, but for some reason this holiday has me seeking assurance that I am doing good with my son. I know we all as parents are realistically doing that almost daily, but with my "relationship" with my mother it really hits home on this holiday.
My son is too little still to really understand the holiday, but I feel real shallow when I have to go to the store to buy my own flowers. (I also bought myself candy for spite.) That was the other bummer about yesterday I was told that the day is not about honoring spouses, but your own mother.
Not to be honored in my own home except by myself is really depressing, lol. It reminds me of my issues with my mother. If you are not worthy to be honored than you must be doing something wrong.
I spent my day in prayer. Church service was awesome this morning, and my little guy went up to participate which made me so happy. It was truly another day of the week just with more prayer. Ground myself in the love of the Lord is the best solution. My dad did come over for dinner. It was nice to get a card from him. He reminds me that I am me, and everything is worth it.

I am so happy I have my son.
God truly knew what he was doing blessing me with a little boy to connect with.

National Day of Prayer

If you work with an accountant all day you will become good at numbers.
If you work with a chef all day you will become good with food.
If you work with a carpenter all day you will learn not to miss the nail.

If you go to the Lord in pray you will learn to be more like Jesus.

Lord, I pray we all go back to you.
That we learn only through you and with you will we accomplish your will.
Turn our nation and our world back towards following you God.
Bless Your Kingdom on this earth.
Amen

A Dark Day

A couple of years ago I attended my first Good Friday service. Almost sounds bad to say, but I enjoyed it. It was very moving and emotional for me. Unfortunately it was the last one our town had, and I have not gotten the guts to go somewhere else for another one. If you have never been to a Good Friday service I strongly suggest you go to one. I was asked to participate by reading some scripture during the service. I was so excited!

In typical noob-Christian fashion I "knew" Christ died on the cross for my sins. It wasn't until I was asked to stand in front of a bunch and people and read Mark 15:17-20 that I truly realized that He died because of me. Not just for me, but because of me. Now listen- we are not meant to live our lives with this guilt! Christ never intended our lives to be lived in indebtedness, but I do believe that it is important that as we grow in our relationship that we realize the importance of this.
"They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!” Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him."    -Mark 15:17-20
It's not just that he was put to death by unimaginable pain, but he was mocked and made fun of. I could not stop myself from crying while trying to read this in front of everyone. It hurt. It still hurts. I look at others who don't realize the importance of this and I get upset. His death was not simple or quick.  To look up in the faces of those I assumed to be "mature" Christians and see that they never realized what He endured for us... all because of me... and because of you. How does that not make you want to change? Maybe I'm crazy, but it makes me want to prove that He didn't do it in vain.

Palm Sunday

Put your palm frond in the air and wave it all around!
Here we are at the start of Holy week. Jesus is coming into town today,
and everybody is waiting for the King.

When you were a child and got hurt what did you want to happen? Think on that for a minute. What do you remember happening when you were hurt (physically or emotionally), upset, or sick as child? Did your parents attack the boy who broke up with you? Did they publicly humiliate the kids who made fun of you? Did they sue the doctor when you got sick? No..... They loved you.
They loved you and healed you; whether you were rocked, held, given a band-aid, soup, medicine, or sang to you. You needed love. You needed to be comforted and humanized.

When Jesus came people were looking for a king; armor wearing-vengeance seeking-warrior king. They wanted someone to come in and put down all other nations and raise them to their glory and status. In today's language, they weren't going to be a third-world country. They were going to be the richest, strongest, and most desired nation of all. So what the hoo-ha was he doing on a donkey?!
They expected a king, not The King. This man who rode into town on a donkey was going to overthrow the entire system and save everyone?  One man, woman, and child at a time. He saved them with love. When we have been wounded what do we truly seek? Not the smiting of a king, but the love and understanding of The King. Jesus brought people to him by acts of love, not shows of power. He refused the demons to speak because they knew who he was. He did not want people to come to him because of his relation, position, or any of that stuff. He wanted people to choose him out of love. He fulfilled the needs of the many, and what were their needs? Acceptance, to be humanized, to feel loved, and to be appreciated.
We all deep-down want the true love of someone who will lay down their life to save ours.
Some knew when Jesus rode into town on a donkey that he was their King.

If Jesus was alive today, right this very moment, would he still be put to death? Would His words in today's world be any different than they were then? Would He be loving people, healing people, humanizing people, and railing against what is so wrong with our world?

You do understand that Jesus had a choice, right?
There came a moment when he had to decide:
If I continue doing this I will die. Or I can stop. Stop loving everybody, stop healing, stop telling people about God... and I can live.
Jesus chose to die to prove that he loves you above his own life.

St. Patrick's Day!!!

I LOVE ST. PATTY'S DAY!!

Otay, now that I have that out of the way, lol.  What is it about St. Patrick's Day? Should a Christian enjoy St. Patrick's Day? That's like suggesting we celebrate Mardis Gras- gasp!
My maiden name is McEnulty and my mother's side is Wiley... very Irish roots over here. I have always loved St. Patrick's Day, and have always been very proud of my Irish roots (red hair, white complexion, freckles, and all). Last year I was working on putting together a "Blessed not Lucky" party for the kids at church when I learned so much about the truth behind St. Patrick.
It's funny how America has turned it into a day to get drunk on green beer or a day to celebrate Irish heritage. Who knows what St. Patrick's Day was really?
St. Patrick's Day was set on March 17th, the day he died. "He drove the snakes out of Ireland." I can't count how many coloring pages I did on that growing up in school. Going at it from a Christian point of view though- what in the Bible does a serpent/snake represent? St. Patrick was given his sainthood for his missionary work in Ireland. He spread Christianity, and in the same token "drove out" pagan religions. That's what is meant by driving the snakes out of Ireland. He was converting people to Christianity from druidry, mainly. As he walked through Ireland preaching Christianity he used the shamrock, something which grows in abundance there, to teach about the Holy Trinity.

I have never gone out on St. Patrick's Day beside lunch. Honestly, I try to be home as soon as I can on this day because drunk drivers do concern me. I do celebrate it though. I dress in green to the nine's and decorate the house to celebrate my Irish history. Since last year though it has taken on a new meaning... He was a missionary. A boy who was kidnapped and put into slavery. Who ran away when he felt the calling of God, and went on to become the largest Christian movement in Irish history! How awesome is that!!
Have a smile today to know that 90% of the U.S. celebrates St. Patrick's Day and have no idea it's a "Christian" holiday. Know that they don't understand it. People today think they know our history- they don't. Be a missionary today... tell them what it's about. Is it time to drive the snakes out the United States....??
HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

Christmas...

Christmas morning the parents asked their little girl,
"Did you get everything you asked for?!"
The little girl replied,
"No, but it's not my birthday."
