Ash Wednesday

Today, March 1st, is the start of Lent! 40 days that we make a commitment to cut out the unhealthy and ungodly things in our lives, and replace them with ways to seek and honor God's presence. The last few days I have been praying and seeking what I need to fast. Early this morning it became clear to me what I should do for these forty days. My largest struggles in general are glutton and finances.
I love food! I love it too much! I struggle with self control; I eat too much and don't pay attention to what I'm eating. So, I am going to basically start with a Daniel Fast and work backwards to what else I can have. For instance, I am going to allow meat and my diet coke for starters.
Last Thursday I started Financial Peace University for the second time. Two things stood out to me in that first video. 1) Do I control my money or does it control me?  2) Dave Ramsey told the story that someone came to him and said that by they time they get to the end of their budget they have no money left to tithe, and Dave said to him that he had his budget upside down. I feel like my money controls me. Don't get me wrong, I am implementing FPU and huge changes have happened in our lives. But I still feel like I'm living around our finances and it sucks. Then, when he Dave told the guy he had his budget upside down I had shell shock. This morning I just knew in my heart that God is asking me to trust Him with my money! I have been making steps, but this morning I committed to tithe 10% for the duration of Lent. I know, it's only four Sundays but I have to start somewhere.
I also set an alarm on my phone and pulled out a fresh journal that I will make purposeful, dedicated time to journal with God every day! I am excited about this! Two weeks ago I found my journal that I started after I was baptized full of my new spiritual discoveries and realizations. I missed that. I am going back to giving my hand to God. I am amazed at what he does with my open heart and a pen in my hand.

Tonight I also did something new:
I attended my first Ash Wednesday service!

All things God always come full circle and this service finished what started this morning. Ash Wednesday kicks off the start of Lent, yes. Lent though is a 40 day walk with Christ. A walk that asks us to examine the sin we've accumulated in our lives. The whole purpose Christ went to the cross was to pay for our sins. We are to live as joyous, redeemed Christians, but we should take this time each year to truly examine what sin crept in to our habits/lives. I had yet to realize that depth of Lent. It is the time to realize what Christ died for.
I felt harsh on myself this morning for using the term glutton, but in light of tonight's service I needed to take that serious step back and look at what has crept in.

Turning 6 and Shark Fun!

I can hardly believe it.
It's been six years since my son was born!
Where did all the time go?

My big guy put in the request for a "Jaws" birthday party early this year! His love of sharks knows no bounds. Every year I enjoy putting together the best party I can for my Bubby. My crafty-pinterest-mom card comes out to make a super cool stuff. So he got his Jaws birthday cake and shark filled room.
Since going through Financial Peace University and being diligent to God the last several months my husband and I had the greatest pleasure of being able to take our son to the aquarium for his birthday. After his party we drove down to spend the next day at the Newport Aquarium! It was amazing!!! We all got to pet sharks and penguins! Connor was the brave man and pet a starfish! (I pet the horseshoe crab.) The aquarium is just epic! I highly recommend it to everyone.
They have 14 large sharks that you can watch at different places in the aquarium. Plus, they have about 15 sharks in the pet-the-shark area which is incredibly cool! Connor's favorites were the Shark Rays and the white alligator. Then to end it all best for him they had a stuffed alligator snapper turtle in the gift shop that he got with his birthday money in memory of his turtle (Toothless) that passed away.

Books to Start 2017

So in case you didn't know, I am an avid book reader! My book passion started from a very early age, but in fifth grade my love for reading went to another level. That summer I read 100 books for our local library's reading challenge. Ever since then I have read hundreds of more books. Last year wasn't my best year for reading though. Lots of stuff was happening and I just "couldn't get my head in the game." So my TBR (to-be-read) pile is pretty big right now. I have some books goaled to get read by April. I have high hopes with my intentionality this year that I can do it!

Here are the six books I would like to get through in the next two months; titles are links to Amazon.com.

Unoffendable, by: Brant Hansen

I listened to Brant Hansen on Air1 radio during his three year career there. I knew I had to read his book: the idea that "righteous anger" is a myth. Learning to give yourself peace by choosing to not be offended. Sounds very needed in the world today.

Dealing with Diabetes Burnout, by: Ginger Vieira

This, of course, is not for everyone, but I am very excited about reading this! Encouragement is a hard thing to get when you're a diabetic. Staying on top of everything while doing everything else is such a challenge!

Girls with Swords, by: Lisa Bevere

I love Lisa Bevere! She is a phenomenal evangelist! I have two other of her books, and I have been excited and waiting to read this one! Women need to arm themselves with the word of god! Going to be a review done on this one!

Life Together, by: Dietrich Bonhoeffer

I have not heard of Dietrich Bonhoeffer until recently, but this book was recommended to me and it sounded like an excellent try! Bonhoeffer lived in WWII and was a Pastor and conspirator against Hitler. This book is about the community of believers.

360° Preaching, by: Michael Quicke

Title is pretty much self explanatory. This is for my personal development in preaching and exegesis. Several pastors in my CLI classes have recommended this to me, and I got it as a gift the end of last year. This talks a lot about approaching your sermon from all senses.

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, by: Peter Scazzero

So this as a recommendation from a Christian vlogger, and it looked good. Just the tagline of the book: "It's impossible to be spiritually mature, while remaining emotionally immature." Sounds like I may get prodded for some more growing!

Psalm 18 Heals

24) The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
25) To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
26) to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.
27) You save the humble but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.
28) You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.
29) With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.
30) As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord's word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.

                                    ~Psalm 18: 24-30  (NIV)

Since October people in my life and family have definitely put me through the ringer. With the passing of our baby God pulled us in and it was amazing! The love and healing that God brought to mine and my husband's lives cannot be explained fully. Phoenix was a line in our lives: a spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional line in the sand. My husband and I decided what loosing our son would mean and how our lives would continue, and God has incredibly blessed our decision. People we never thought of showed their love in the most amazing and healthy ways to us.
Decidedly with that though there is another side. People we assumed would understand and respect us have hurt us deeply. Selfish actions in the middle of us loosing our son are one of those things that have haunted my mind and heart for months.

Christ Follower
The best visual I have for this is bats in a cave. If you just walk in to the pitch black cave without any light you won't disrupt the bats. If you turn on a flashlight in the middle of the cave though....you are going to have an ugly mess because of how bad you upset them.
What I am still learning three months later is that my Phoenix wasn't just the amazing burst of light from God for my husband and I. He was the amazing burst of light from God in the middle of our environment! Like turning on a flashlight in a cave of bats, God's gift of Phoenix drew people closer to Him, and sadly drove others away.
When people have problems with God they take their anger and pain out on those who follow God closely. With the overwhelming power and love of God that was present in all we went through I forgot it would upset the bats. I was a little naïve in thinking that our environment was a safe place. I thought people would stow away their pettiness and anger to be in the glory of what happened. I was very much mistaken, and hurt in the process.

"To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd."

Family Reformed
Our definition of family has been reformed. Not even two weeks after Phoenix passed my husband and I were at home going through what everyone had done (and were still doing) since we found out the bad news about our son. Some people brought us tears of joy, and some brought us heartbreak and pain. Literally, we started writing a list of who we considered our new family and what qualities they brought to our lives. We have this list in our kitchen! I keep this list in my planner and Bible so I remind myself to pray for those who were with us. It was the most freeing thing I have done in such a long time. Now before you even assume it, not everyone in our new family is from our church or even a Christian.
Those who loved us the most didn't necessarily even talk to us while we were in the hospital! What?! Not even knowing what we needed ourselves, it was the people who took the initiative to just bring us dinner, who sent us a message saying they're praying for us, mailing us cards, and randomly surprising us with something. The pure intention of loving us in the middle of it all, and not expecting anything from us truly changed our life.
Just like Christ remaking his family, we remade ours!

"...my God turns my darkness into light."

The Story of Phoenix

This post does not come lightly or easily.

It is a lot harder than I thought it would be to sit at a keyboard and express what happened. As all things human, you are allowed to disagree with our choices and life, and therefore you are welcome not to read this post. However, you are NOT allowed to attack, belittle, or debase me and/or my husband for a situation you have never personally experienced.

I had prayed for a second child for so long that last year I finally started being intentional about praying for God's will, and not my selfish want.

I had finely received peace and joy with the fact that Connor would be my only child. Through April, May, and June I had been cleaning the totes of stuff in our house and had donated all the baby things I held on to (just in case) to our church to bless someone else. I was excited about the peace I felt. I had mentally prepared myself for years that I would not be one of those parents that mourned a child I didn't have. Especially having Connor! I never wanted him to ever think that that he was not wanted or worthy! I have seen what happens to children raised by those types of parents, and it's heart-breaking. Through those months God talked me through the releasing of my want into His will, and it finally happened. I had a euphoric peace that our little family of three was meant to be!

The start of July I had gone through a lot. Between finishing VBS, totaling my vehicle, and my diabetes doctor out of the country I was struggling with my health and stress. Calling my doctor about concerns I had he finally convinced me to take a pregnancy test. Following up with the doctor on Friday, July 15th it became official that we were pregnant! I was unexpectedly overflowing with bliss! I released things to God's will and He provided in His time!
This pregnancy was so perfectly normal. I was worried about things that didn't happen when I was pregnant with Connor, but after talking with my doctor I learned my pregnancy with Connor was very abnormal. All the "normal" pregnancy things were happening with bump#2; morning sickness, cravings, back pain, exhaustion, weight gain, etc. It was odd to adjust to. I was extremely conscious and cautious with this pregnancy as well. With so much happening this pregnancy, and the fact that we weren't even trying I made sure I did everything I could for my health. I also decided that I was going to do everything I didn't do with Connor. My pinterest board for bump#2 was full of things.

We (I) made pregnancy announcements! I hid this odd shame I had when I was pregnant with Connor. It's like I couldn't enjoy being pregnant because originally we weren't married. Even though this was unplanned as well I was going to enjoy it, and not take it for granted. I missed out on so many things with my first pregnancy because I thought I wasn't supposed to enjoy it. I wasn't going to make the same mistake again. I was going to take every chance I had with this pregnancy.

My appointment in August ended on an awkward note. The doctor and the ultrasound staff could not get a heart rate for the baby. They assured me it was just because the baby was still so small, and I was rescheduled a month out.

Bubby was so excited to become a big brother! He had been asking for a sibling for a couple of years by this point. So the baby had him super excited. It was amazing to watch and listen to. He and I were both praying for a little girl- much to my husband's angst.

Our church celebrated its 150th year in ministry in September. It was an epic moment for me. Enjoying this spiritual milestone with both my children beside me touched me to the core. I preached once while pregnant, and the thought that my baby was touched by my calling from the womb was amazing.

My next appointment in September went about the same as the one in August. I went in first for an ultrasound to get the baby's heart rate; which came through beautifully! Then toward the end of the ultrasound the tech called in my doctor to look at some things. They informed me I was going to be sent to a specialist to have the baby checked out. At first I was going that day, but the specialist said I was not far enough along yet so I was scheduled to go in October. When leaving the office I was told not to worry about anything so that made me a little scared when leaving, but I just prayed for God's will be done and carried on enjoying my bump!

I had an amazing surprise when I got home from school one Saturday. Hubby and Bubby made me a family of pumpkins for our house! Halloween being my favorite holiday; I finally had some outside everlasting decorations! They were too perfect! Our marriage was changing with this pregnancy. Our relationship with our son was changing. It was amazing to watch what God was doing in our home.

Our next appointment was October 13th. We were going to see the neo-specialist for an ultrasound and find out the gender! I planned a huge a gender reveal party for the following weekend! I was so excited because I was sure it was a girl and it was technically another first for me! The specialist appointment was not a big deal for me because I saw one most of my first pregnancy. Being a diabetic I was surprised that I hadn't been sent to one sooner with this pregnancy just to rule things out.

Thursday, October 13th is now a day that will probably live in my memory for the rest of my life.
When we were called back we were shocked to be ushered into a private room and introduced to a Genetics Counselor. She sat us down and from go started talking about the two possibilities that were wrong with our baby. We could not have been more shocked if she had pulled a snake out of her ear! Needless to say that was not how we were expecting our appointment to start. Trying to hold it together all I could ask was if she was mistaken. She explained that she did not want to take away our hope, but there was no mistake and a slim/if-any chance that we would get any good news that day.
At the start of the ultrasound we found out we were having a boy- much to my husband's joy. Half way through the ultrasound you could feel the mood in the room change. Our cheerful and happy tech became very quiet and solemn. At the end she asked us to stay put as she retrieved the specialist and genetics counselor.
Our baby had what is called an anencephaly. In his development his neural tube formed wrong making his skull not fully form. So basically, he had a significantly large hole at the base of his skull, and that caused his brain to grow/develop outside of his skull. There was a possibility I could carry to term, but based on the fact that he was not moving it would only be because my body was barely sustaining him. There was a 10% possibility that he would live past the first 24hours of birth, but he would live the rest of his life in a hospital with multiple surgeries and in pain. Due to the brains' development he would never be conscious of anything if he survived; he would not be able to swallow, blink, or know we even existed. On top of that, he had a large hole in the outside wall of his heart and one of the valves was growing wrong; which would mean more surgeries.
The crux of this situation was that I had to be far enough along to be able to find these issues, but I was almost too far along to do anything to help my son. We had one week to decide if we were going to continue with our pregnancy. The doctor reminded us that we had to consider the quality of life we and our other son would have should we continue.
God love my husband, he took us straight to our Pastor. She prayed with us as we explained everything the doctors told us, and tried talking about our feelings. This was one of those things that are not in the Bible though. There is just praying and knowing that God gave us the technology we have today. We had been given very straight and factual information from very educated and experienced medical professionals.

We had a very hard weekend. Our decision was not made lightly or negligently. Ultimately, our decision was based on the fact that we could not put our son through that kind of pain. Any life he would have possibly had would not have been a life. I know it was hard for my husband, and it was hard for me. The child I had been praying for, for longer than I care to admit, I would have to give back to God. We canceled our gender reveal party with the only comment that an update would be revealed soon. We decided as a couple that we were going to disappear from social media for a while so we could heal. We knew we owed no explanation to anyone at all, but before totally departing social media we both wanted to inform everyone what had happened.

Monday, October 17th
That following Monday I had the follow up with my regular OB to talk about what happened at the specialist and to give her our decision. After my doctor really explained what was happening it didn't become an option about how to continue. There was more wrong with the baby than the specialist told us about; one thing being his lungs not forming right. The fact that I was a diabetic meant I would be on serious observation for liver failure and a range of other problems because it was inevitable the baby would start to damage me. Due to all that she informed me that the baby was officially listed in my medical file as life threatening to me. Everything in the appointment just concreted our decision all the more. Then, my doctor went to take the heart rate of the baby and it had dropped severely, reinforcing that the baby was dying.
She wanted me to go immediately to the hospital to deliver the baby. First, I was in slight shock because I didn't realize that I would actually be delivering our child. My brain had not processed that far ahead of what would actually happen. Second, neither my husband nor I was prepared to go that quickly! She gave me a list of decisions that had to be made before I could deliver, and they were things we had never thought of in our life! We scheduled to go in the following morning so we had time to make arrangements for our son, our jobs, and make the list of decisions. Having just informed everyone the day before that we were pulling away to heal, we purposely chose not to inform anyone. Some things are just too personal and heartbreaking that no one needs to know about it.

Tuesday, October 18th
The next morning in the hospital was another level of reality check. I wanted and respected that the staff spoke to us in a very matter-of-fact way about what all would happen, but some things still came as a shock to us. One thing being that we had to fill out a death certificate in case he was born breathing. We named him Phoenix; it seemed so perfect. The legend of the phoenix is that he is continually reborn from his own death, and knowing our baby would be reborn absolutely perfect in God's arms is something no parent could wish more for.
We were blessed beyond thought by the nurse who assigned herself to my room, Kasey. She had experienced something similar to me, and it was reassuring that she was able to personally talk me through some things. I will remember her for a VERY long time! We were also immeasurably blessed that our Pastor was there for us. My husband and I having never thought about "arrangements" in any situation before the previous night didn't know what to do. All we had decided was that we would cremate our son. God love our Pastor because she took care of all the arrangements for us while we were in the hospital. That afternoon a bouquet of purple flowers arrived in my room from my former boss. Just that one, small, loving, and surprising gesture made everything a smidgen better.
Unfortunately, come that first night in the hospital people started harassing us and our Pastor. So many blessings on my husband, at one point I knew he was ready to hurt people because I just was laying in bed crying. Not even over a fact like we were praying our son would not suffer a horrible birth, but that people we considered family would not leave us in peace and thought they had a right to hurt us like that! We as parents were loosing a child and all they seemed to care about was that we didn't want to talk to them! Due to all the stress that was happening the nurses decided to give me something to sleep, and with that I was thankful to have the room to myself that night.

Wednesday, October 19th
The next morning I unfortunately woke to my cell phone going off. Things continued not much better through the morning for my husband and I in regards to people and messages being sent to us and other people. Come afternoon I opted to have an epidural because they had to double my inducement medication because I was not dilating. A while after that happened we realized two things. One, my double dose of inducement medicine was kicking in. Two, the epidural was only working for my right side- not my left. After major shifting and some tears due to pain I was finally, mostly numbed out below the waist. I spent the afternoon trying to enjoy some much missed food network and not think about the reason I was in the hospital while sharing my bed with Hubby.
Right at 6pm (nurse shift change) I paged my nurse to say goodbye and give her my thanks because they next day she was off. That is when everything started to happen. It had started storming outside, and I felt the baby coming as Kasey came into the room. This was a whole new experience for me because my first son was C-section. We had to wait for my doctor to make it from another hospital before I could actually deliver. When she arrived though Phoenix Randall-Allen came at 6:46pm, stillborn.
Kasey, our nurse, stayed with me till I had him, then she took him to a separate room to be cleaned up while I was being cleaned up so that we could hold him later. We originally were not going to hold him. The day before I had asked Kasey (she also works with bereavement counseling) about the hardest part for women going through these situations, and she told us that the women who chose to never hold or look at their babies had the worst times moving forward. Something in my gut told me she was absolutely right, and I decided at that point the day before that we were going to hold our son.
I won't lie; I was kind of scared to hold him. He was only 19wks old and we were not sure what abnormalities he would have. That didn't stop us though, and I thank God for that because he was perfect. Kasey did a great job the day before explaining to us what we would experience when we held him, and we appreciated that a lot. We held him for a while, and then we held each for even longer. I was thankful to have the room to myself that night again. Laying in the quiet with God after everything gave me such peace. I knew God had my baby, and I knew it was meant to be.

Thursday, October 20th
The next morning as soon as I talked to the nurse I was up walking as much as I could. My left leg was still numb, and they would only discharge me if I could walk on it. So between eating breakfast and packing I was pacing my room, lol. As I was being discharged later my nurse brought me a box that her and my other two nurses put together for my husband and me the night before. It had Phoenix's hand and foot prints, his booties, and some other memorabilia. It was an amazing keepsake they put together for us. I was incredibly blessed to have these angels by my side the last three days. They truly meant a lot to me.
I was grateful to be going home though! I couldn't wait for Connor to come from school and Hubby to get home from work. I wanted to be surrounded by my guys in our home.

Moving On...
It was just another blessing that our church family and other friends arranged dinner for us over a week. I was off work for five weeks, and by that point I wanted to go back to work. Having all that free time must have made people think I needed entertained, lol. I did not get much alone time during those weeks.
The weeks following October 19th were tough. Our struggles were 99.9% with other people. I was in total shock to find out that some people actually believed we handled some things wrong. I am still deeply hurt and trying to heal from the selfishness of some people. The thought that anyone would ever think they had the right to be involved in us loosing our son is low.
Occasionally I got sad, but that is ok. The day I got on pinterest and saw my baby board was hard. Explaining what happened in the most age appropriate way to our son was a challenge. Knowing that he didn't truly understand that Phoenix was gone was hard to watch. Someone asking how many kids you have- how do you answer that? The first week coming back to work and everybody wondering where I was and if the baby was ok, that really caught me off guard. The big shock was that I was so ready to "get back to life" and the day I realized that nothing really changed hurt. I was getting up to go to school and was doing all the normal routine that I always do, and it hit. We did not have a nursery set up. I wasn't in to maternity clothes yet. I had not even gained any weight or bought anything. As far as physical changes this brought in our lives there was nothing tangible except ultrasound photos. I wondered that morning if those five months were a dream.

Despite the hurt we had a memorial for Phoenix with everybody so they could hear the whole story and say goodbye. Connor picked out a giant blue balloon to send to his brother and it was pretty amazing! I prayed hard that this would give closure to the family because I was done. I wanted life to move on. Not in a forget-him way, but in a live-in-the-love way! Phoenix in his brief five months was a blessing for my husband, son, and I and the ugliness that happened after his passing was such an insult to his innocent life.

Some people may view this as callous, but I had JOY and PEACE! I felt so close to God, and so loved. My only true prayer for my kids was always going to be that they knew Christ. I knew/know exactly where Phoenix is and there is no sadness in that! He is perfectly complete. The presence of peace that knowing everything happened in His will is just amazing. I occasionally wondered if I had too much peace, but then I would realize how silly that was. God gave me the greatest gift, and I don't regret it.

Thanks to our wonderful church my husband and I will always have Phoenix with us!
We didn't know they made these wonderful necklaces that hold remains, but we each got one!

Patriotism

It is our duty to pray for our leaders! (1Timothy 2:1-2)

I do not want to know who you voted for. It does not matter anymore.

Today is Inauguration Day for the United States of America.

That means that at 12pm today our 45th President was sworn in to office. Our country has a new leader and with that they all need our prayers!

I will admit, I do not understand all these protests and riots. There is a difference in standing up for a cause and outright disrespecting our nation. That is all these protests and riots are doing. If they were honest in their intentions about wanting the best for our country then they would not do this. The bottom line is they are disrespecting of our Nation, our Constitution, and our way of government.

Our country has fought segregation of all kinds for so long. Is this what America has become? A country bent on division and segregation at all costs?

Now we stand together. Whether that is praying, keeping our mouths quiet, and/or keeping our social medias quiet. No one wants to be known as the boy who cried wolf. Otherwise when the time comes to give your input it won't matter because people won't want to hear you. Be kind, be wise, and above all stop hating. Hate has never got anybody anything.

How Real is Real?

Question: How real do you want your Pastor?

Evidently this is a serious dilemma.
Maybe I'm just a silly person, but I want a Pastor that is real. Someone who acts, preaches, posts, and talks like they've never struggled is a serious turn off for me. I want to hear the word of God from someone who has applied it! I am totally ok with knowing that my Pastor is not perfect and is a human being. In my life, that only reinforces Christ for me.

Why do we even learn about Christ?

To learn that He went through real things like us fallible human beings.
          So we can relate.
So we can apply what He did.
So we learn and grow closer to Him.

So... why would learning that your Pastor made a mistake or had "teenage years" or had a human emotion like depression make you think less of them? Doesn't that sound asinine and hypocritical? There is a defining line in whether they are teaching Biblical matters or having a human emotion. Don't confuse the two.
We throw around the term forgiveness like confetti, but we seldom let our pastors have any. Why? Yes, they are to be held to a different level of accountability because they are teaching God's word and leading His sheep BUT, so are average-jo Christians. When you call yourself a Christian or claim God in front of another what you do in that situation is a teaching/witnessing moment to others. You are held accountable as well. Bad mouthing a Pastor about having a human moment is a very human moment on a bad level. What are you teaching others about you?
Expecting our pastors to hide their life is horrible. How many times have you read about Christ being mad, sad, disappointed, unsure... Those sound very human to me. That sounds a lot like what I struggle with some days. Does that make me less? Why would that make your Pastor less?

What forms the ideology that a Pastor cannot be human? I don't see where in the Bible that has a basis. When Christ came he was not impressed with the religious people of the day. He went out to the people who had made mistakes. He taught them. He ate with them. He let them lead and teach others. The man who wrote over half the New Testament, Paul, used to crucify followers of Christ!

*This has been an issue of personal self discovery and horror for me.
Self discovery in the aspect that I have decided that I am going to be known as that real pastor. I cannot pretend to people that I never went through miserable situations or did things I am not proud of. How can I show what Christ did in my life if I was already perfect? I will talk about my sexy husband, the pains of raising a child, the struggle of coworkers, how depression stinks, and more. That is what God has gifted me with in this life, and that is what He uses to teach me His word.
The horror of this situation is about what I am willingly walking into. Am I that crazy? I am appalled that this is an actual situation in life. I wonder and pray if I am strong enough to handle the attacks that people come up with. That people will use my own life against me, and I will love them anyway. That makes me sound mad as a hatter!
It also teaches me that "The better part of Valour is Discretion." ( Spoken by Falstaff in King Henry IV, Part I, by William Shakespeare) Learning when, why, and how to share my truths will be the ultimate lesson. Rashness in the name of bravery will backfire. In the same token though, I am human and sometimes things happen. With the measure of grace and forgiveness I give I would hope to be given. Looking at how some pastors are treated in that regard I better protect my heart well and pray diligently.

Intentional!

As 2015 was coming to a close I realized that I wasn't going to do resolutions. I can't keep resolutions. I needed a new way of doing! That's when I read about a person who would discern a word for each coming year to live out. I knew instantly that was what God was calling me to. In the midst of that December I had discerned my first word of the many to come: Change. My was the Lord right about that one! What a year 2016 shaped up to become.

The past month my word for 2017 became very clear: Intentional. God spent December showing me in what ways my intentionality needed to step up. As I said in my prior post, God has blessed me with a break from my classes to take these coming months to redirect my time back in to the areas that have sadly started to lag due to my schedule and own bad timing.
      • God time
      • Family time
      • Me time

God time: I will be more intentional in my walk with Him. I have sermons that I will finish. I started the Bible in a Year reading program. I am already planning for my Lenten Fast. I will be more intentional in lifting up my Pastor in prayer and spiritual support! I will spend more alone time with God this year in trying to listen and find out what my path is and discerning my ministry. I will also be intentional in praying for my church in protection. God is going to do something mighty this year, and I pray it is welcomed with open arms.

Family time: My husband and I went through a lot of loss the last six months and have realized that we need to evaluate what/whom we have in our lives. We have these coming months to spend more time together with our son, and we are going to take advantage of it. My husband are I are going at our finances in full force this year. After I completed the Financial Peace Program we agreed we are tired of living paycheck to paycheck and constantly fighting Murphy's Law. Some may say it's morbid, but we just finished taking care of our will and burial wishes. I am excited about getting some financial freedom and PEACE. Along with the loss we endured we have been put through some very painful experiences, and with that we have redefined who our family truly is. We have friends who are so valuable to us, and family we do not see often so we are going to reinforce time with them.

Me time: I don't mean that I will be spending time by myself, but that I will be working on me! A lot of my "me time" is me rediscovering myself in a way. I will be working on what defines my ministry and where it is going. Discerning my role for this year in my church and in the future. The weight loss from physical therapy and my changed eating habits have really sparked me to go hard at it! I am fine-tuning my exercise routine and trying to cut out all the bad junk. I am spending more time writing and getting through my TBR pile of books! I have been going through my stuff at home and trying to find what brings me joy again. Every couple of years it is best to rediscover yourself, and since this year is about intentionality- why not!

Another aspect of the intentionality that I am being shown is exactly how intentional others are, as well. That was an interesting surprise to me. I thought I should focusing on my intentions with things in my life, but God is going to teach me about others intentions TOWARD me this year. As I'm learning in this walk to follow God, the intentions of others are not always pure; sometimes they are downright hurtful and evil. It breaks my heart more than anything every time this happens. I'm beginning to learn that is the intention though. What do villains teach us? To get to the super hero they hurt the closest person to them- no matter their innocence. It may hurt for a bit, but I will welcome it all because it's a blessing that I'm drawing the line for God in my life.
"Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets."  -Luke 6:22-23 (NIV)

2017

A New Year - a new me - literally.

So much happened in 2016. On one hand I was so blessed through all of it. On the other, I am so grateful it is over. As you can see below my last post was at the start of June. Here's a quick recap of what happened since then.

June: We had our 29th Annual Traditional Nationals Archery weekend. I had some issues with my diabetes and had to switch back to the insulin pen during this month and stayed on it till Aug.
July: The weekend of the 4th I was in an accident that totaled my Vibe. My husband and I found out that I was pregnant.
August: My son started Kindergarten, and had to switch sitters.
September: My church celebrated it's 150th anniversary in ministry!
October: We found out a bad situation with my pregnancy, and we lost the baby.
November: I started Physical Therapy due to complications from loosing the baby. My husband's uncle passed away Thanksgiving day. I graduated Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University program.
December: I directed our church's annual Craft Fair. I preached during Advent. Both my husband I had vehicle problems.

So much more happened in all that time. I had classes every month, family (wide-camera-lens family) issues, church and work responsibilities, and the regular wife/mom stuff. I let myself free from certain constraints. The stress and blessings I was going through made me let go of the control I fight so hard for. Following God means being able to change/adapt on a dime some days, and even moment to moment. 2016 caused my life to change a lot. For the better- always for the better, but never-the-less change. My word for 2016 was change. I knew 2016 would bring it, but I wasn't prepared for the full extent. I don't regret it though. The change swept through our little family, and the last half of 2016 taught me the truest since of it. It was a challenge at first, but come December I felt so free to just be whatever or whenever He wanted me to. My relationship with my husband has grown incredibly stronger the past few months, and this freedom I have found has been key to it.

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."    -Romans 8:28  NIV

The one thing I know without a doubt through everything that has happened the last six months is that God has been right beside me, loved me, and grew me in everything. I never questioned His will. I may have questioned why I didn't question Him, but that explanation will be in a later post.

Going in to 2017 I have a break from my classes. I have realized God gave me this gift; this Intentional opportunity to spend more time with Him, my husband, my son, and especially my writing. I have quite a few sermons I am going to work through and finish. I, also, have a lot of writings I plan to finish for this blog and get posted.

I am going to have at least one post a week for a few months. I will explain the major things that happened last year as they reflect the growth God got me through. Plus, I have some good writings I've had trolling around my head I will finally get out on paper (er...computer...) to share with everyone.

I am excited and anxious to start this New Year!
2017 with be intentionally great!

Yes, I ask permission!

I don't know about your social media circle, but recently an article went through mine. A very good article about reasons why it is good to ask permission. Which when I shared it led to many questions. So, I believe my own explanation is in order!

Yes, I do ask my husband permission in our marriage.
Yes, I am very proud of it!

When you ask me to do something you will hear me say, "let me ask my husband..." That is fact one of my marriage. I know several couples of the system: "we are our own people." Cool for you. The sole reason of why I ask permission is out of RESPECT.

My husband is my equal and the leader of our home. His role is to set the standard for my son in faith, life, relationships, work, etc. How can my husband accurately lead my son if I am robbing him of his role? I believe we are hitting a point culturally where "women empowerment" means man-shaming. "We are our own person why should we curtail to a man..."

It is not submission in the definition of the derogatory term that this world has adopted. It is giving my husband back the respect of his place in our home, our relationship, and my life. When we married we became "one flesh" (Gen 2:24, Matt 19:6, Eph 5:31), not two! When I married my husband no where did it say that we carry on as different people with our own lives. It said that we are one flesh which means we must be on the same page of our marriage and life together- everyday! No action no matter how small "only affects me." In my opinion, that is a very short sighted excuse to life. My choices affect my husband the same as his actions have repercussions to me, and not just the opposite spouse but toward our son as well.

The action of asking my husband is an action of trust and honor. I am going to him as my partner. I am going to him as my equal. I am giving him the same respect that I would expect in return. It disturbs me greatly to hear of wives and even husbands who say "I just tell them what I'm doing, and they can deal." How incredibly disrespectful. Not just to your spouse, but to yourself, your children, and especially to God. Treating your spouse in such a manner is the same as treating God that way. Your spouse IS a child of God. (When someone disrespects my son they are disrespecting me- see how it works?)

I want my husband and I to have an open communication in our marriage. I want that example for my son. I want that example for the kids I lead. I want that example for every person in our lives. In order for that to happen though, I have to SHOW him what that is, how that happens, and that I can do it to! At some point in your relationship I am sure you have been the culprit of "volun-told." You nominate the significant other to do something without consulting them before-hand.... I have done this before. I am human (and female). It doesn't mean that I am operating our marriage this way. I have grown up watching married couples carry out this method. What I saw was the quickest way to upset your spouse. "Oh by the way, you're doing...." WRONG. STOP IT!

My UNbirthday party

Last Sunday I had my UNbirthday Tea Party!!

I had too much fun! It was a painting party, and I got to design my painting for the event- it was epic!

I made "Cheshire" origami gift bags.
I put a lollipop, tea, and a glow stick in each one!
Lemon bars, s'moreos, cheesecake, teacup cakes, colored deviled eggs...
I had it all going on!!
Also, my AMAZING husband made me my Mad Hatter hat!

I, of course, asked everyone to dress up!
I didn't want to be the only crazy at my party!
God Bless my grandmother! She used her Easter bunny outfit for the white rabbit!

My party was epic!
I now have a slight
addiction to have many,
many, many more!!
Look out my lady friends!

Why we DO.

I preached again!
I preached on Matthew 4:18-20 (NIV), and following your calling.

The two weeks I spent working on my sermon were hard. I truly started at A and ended on Q. My sermon was not what I started with or where I thought it would end. Between working through some personal situations and situations I am watching my church go through I am shocked by how much God led me through. It was a good "walk" for me though. I followed God through every step of it, and that turned out to be my sermon. God will make you walk the talk!
I decided the following Monday that I am looking in to getting a video recorder more substantial than my cell phone; I wish I had it recorded to share. All I have is the audio recording and I am working on making a video to put on youtube-maybe. (We will see how that goes.)

I realized two things in the middle of my sermon (actually toward the end).
1- I was uncomfortable on the stage and behind a stand. It felt slightly wrong from the start. Part of my two weeks leading up to that Sunday was mentally preparing myself to step into that "spot". Do not mistake that statement as a disregard for the pulpit. It was realizing a part of following my calling. That is not my preaching zone or style. Whatever you want to attribute it to- different generation, etc. That is just not my true called way to preach.
2- Why am I doing this?! Dang good question. The point of our calling is not what we do, but WHY we do! I am not going to pastor teenagers for glory or to relive my younger years or even to crow that I am doing the impossible. I am doing it because I was hurt by a church as a teenager.

Story time...
I was 12yrs old. I wanted to find a youth group. A time in my life when I wanted friendship and a form of family. Friends were moving away, I was going from elementary to Jr. High, meeting lots of new people, my self-esteem was pretty much in shreds, and the bottom line of it all was that I wanted to know and understand God and find like-minded kids my age.
My mom's friend went to church and took her sons. She offered to take me with them when they went on Wednesday nights for their own groups (her sons were younger than me). I accepted the offer happily. I went to three meetings.
The first time I went I fell in love. I had fun, learned, made friends, and was excited about going back. The second time was just as fun. They were starting to put together their fundraising for their yearly fall ski trip. I was super excited to join. On the third night though, after everything was over and everybody was getting ready to leave, the youth pastor pulled me aside. He explained to me that until I joined the church and started coming to service on Sunday's I would not be able to actually go on the ski trip, but he fully encouraged me to stay signed up for the fundraiser events and to keep coming on Wednesday nights.
I left that night and didn't look back. It was a long time before I looked at church.
Church-burn happens to everybody! That's another matter for another time though.

That is why I do. I don't want any teenager to feel ignored, pushed out, belittled, etc. Not even just teenagers- I don't want anybody to feel that way ever!
The only stupid questions are the questions that are not asked! I want to be asked. I want to do the asking!

All I desperately want is to follow God and His will for my life! At all costs I will endeavor to do so!

Mother's Day Blessing!

This morning I went to my sister's church.
I cannot express how excited I was about today!! I have been waiting all week!
Today, my baby sister dedicated her boys!!!

My heart just bursts with pride and joy for her.
I'm still praying through the issues I have about this holiday, but today was not for me. Today was truly about my sister! She took a huge step today, and I was so honored to be there with her and see it. I was saddened that our family wasn't there, but my son and I were! The way her church handled dedication, and just their service in general was awesome this morning and an honor! At the end they invited the church leaders and anybody to approach the parents and children to pray over them. It took me a nanosecond to decide that I was heading up there! My sister is a good momma to my two super adorable nephews and I thank God that she has found a good man to step up and be there with her, and that she is putting her foot forward! All I ever wanted for her was peace, love, and happiness! I should not have been surprised, but she picked the most perfect motto and verse for her family! Stay #ontarget little love you got this!!!

There is something that I want all mothers out there to know:

You are worthy,
You are enough,
You are tired
-that is ok,
I love you,
God loves you,
God is proud of you,
The struggle is real,
Stand tall,
Don't give up,
Don't let defeat win,
Sometimes our only true calling is the little person we are raising- just like Mary!

National Day of Prayer

What are you praying for today?

Today is the 65th Annual National Day of Prayer. Today we pray for our nation! Today in your prayers give thanks for the men and women who pushed and supported this bill!

You should do yourself a favor and go check out their website: nationaldayofprayer.org
I learned a lot of amazing information this week going through their website. For example, every year they have a theme and verse. This year's verse is Isaiah 58:1a (NIV) "Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet." What a perfect verse! Also, on Thursday, May 8, 1988, Ronald Reagan signed into law Public Law 100-307 the designation of the first Thursday in May as the annual observance for the National Day of Prayer! Then, Bill Clinton signed into law - Pub. L. 105-225, August 12, 1998, 112 Stat. 1258: The President shall issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National Day of Prayer on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals.

Something that hurts me as a Christian is that non-Christians assume "separation of Church and State" means to abolish "church." I find it hilarious that if they only knew that Baptists came up with "freedom of religion." Our once great nation was founded by Godly men on Godly principles. Men who prayed before making decisions about our country. Men who actively sought God's Will in our the leading of our country. A good book (so I'm told-it's on my TBR list) to read is The Jefferson Lies. It's about exposing the lies people have perpetuated about Thomas Jefferson. I pray one day we get back to that place in our nation.

So today at noon I will kneel with millions of people in
prayer for our nation! May God Bless us.

Official Voter!

I voted Tuesday!!
WOOT! WOOT!

My first time voting and I have to tell you what you already know- it was hard! I spent all day Monday and until I went Tuesday to vote researching the candidates on the ballot and praying.
One of my deepest prayers the past couple of months has been for our Christian nation to rise up! I was so excited Tuesday to see through social media so many of my friends voting! I have hope things are going to turn around this year! I will admit to being upset a little when I saw that Trump won for Indiana. I was expecting more people would be following God's call in our state, but God's Will will prevail! Of that I have no doubt.

There is this amazing event happening this summer that I encourage you to go to: Reset 2016! It's a calling for all Christians to go to D.C. this July and fill the mall so we can pray for our country to go back to following God!! HOW AMAZING?!?!?! I am really hoping to go, but my husband is leery of the possible bad things that can happen. Which I, myself, am nervous about as well. I just think this even is a great stand for our country! So many big name people will be there speaking and performing. Can you imagine what the Holy Spirit will be like that day?! I can't fathom it!

Loading...

Hello, hello!
It's only been like two weeks...

So, Kelli has been a busy bee through the month of April! That's only leading into May and June, my two of four busiest months, yikes!
Been doing a lot of thinking and evaluating. Rule one to any good blog/vlog... schedule! The follower wants to know when they can count on something new. I have been a sorry disappointment in this area with my blog. I originally started with the idea that my followers would be subscribers so my erratic schedule would not be a problem because everybody would get the email when I posted... silly Kelli.
So I am putting myself out there with this announcement:
Every Thursday will have a post!!

Ta-da! I did it. There it is. *Phew!*

Now for part two:
Working on the website for my conservation club and another Christian site I really sat down and asked myself: "what do I look for first?" I evaluated searched, and polled for the important guts to a site. I found myself seeing that the most important things I look for were not necessarily in my site!
     So second announcement:
New things are coming!!

What do I mean new things? Well, if you look up ^^ you will see a new tab starting today. This is my first movement forward! It is my "About Me" section. You can read about what I believe and a little about who I am.
More tabs will be on the way! As a new/growing Christian sometimes the hardest thing is to find sound reading/learning material. I plan to share "my library" and "resources" with you all! As time goes on maybe I will have more things to share, but for today I wanted to let you know that I am still here and many posts are on their way!!

For the Love of Archery >>--->

ARCHERY! ARCHERY! ARCHERY!
<------<<

If you can't tell, I love archery. I did archery before Katniss was cool, lol. My Dad was first introduced to archery by his friend when I was nine, and that's when he started to teach me as well. It is a wonderful sport that we learned together. We are traditional archers through and through.
Archery is all about self discipline, focus, and being attuned to your surroundings. When I get anxious, stressed, angry, or depressed that is when I go to my bow the most. It reconnects me, especially spiritually. I am forced (in a good way) to slow down, relax/release my tension, connect with my surroundings, and calm myself emotionally. I believe the trick of traditional archery is calm. You can't hit anything when your emotions are raging all over the board. Archery helped teach me to control myself and not let my emotions control me (and with my depression that was greatly needed).

Archery has and will always be an integral part of my life. I remember when I joined the archery program in my 4-H. There was a Senior in high school in the program who was training for the Olympics (I was eleven). That was a huge moment for me. I knew then I was going to shoot for the Olympics one day. Archery is a community. When I got to Jr. High I felt outcasted. I did not fit in the popular crowds and I was decidedly not athletic, lol. Archery was my home though. My father co-founded archery in the neighboring county's 4-H program. So three days a week I was with him and our family friends teaching and helping run archery there. Those were my friends. I made friends there that are still in my life today. Archery even ran through all my relationships, lol. My two boyfriends and I had archery at our core. Then, my husband and I bonded closest once we realized that we shared the love of archery, as well. (I got him converted from compound to traditional-WOOT!) Now we are on the road to teaching our son the love of bow and arrow!

About a year ago I started teaching a couple of girls archery. It has been awesome! I miss working with the 4-H archery. I love bringing new kids in to a sport that will last a lifetime and get them through anything!
I fell in love when I discovered that in the UK it used to be a practice that churches did archery. It was an integrated system! WHAT?! My two loves combined? Thank you Lord! I read an interesting fact about a year ago that statistically more Christians are archers over firearms people. I'm sure you can find a hundred different ways to explain that, but after I read that there is really not much refuting that. It's one of those things that you realize in the back of your head, but don't really put it together until you hear it.

Since last year I have been working on an archery mission! A way to use the love of archery and connect people to God with it! It has been a healthy challenge to my hobby and knowledge in my faith. I am blessed that my husband is coming along side me to help with this as well. It has taken such a root in our lives (my husband and me) that the weekend of Easter we got our Archery Instructor Certification!!! WOOT!!! A brief drive out of state for a Saturday class, and then last week we received our certificates with USA Archery! So blessed by God's will! I have been working on lessons to coincide with classes! Especially where we live, outdoors is a way of life!

Steward

"Oh, Stewardess..."

No, not that kind of steward!

I received an email from "Trish" recently and it sounded like something that needed shared.
Her email was a reach out for prayer in the specific need of handling the household finances. She is the one responsible for paying the bills between her and her husband. She explained that things had been going really good financially in their family, and she got lax on her diligence of weekly reviewing the bills/income. When she finally sat down to go through things she realized they were in trouble. She got too confident and the numbers showed that they were trending in the red. At the time of the email she was scared; for several reasons. She had no idea what they were going to do. She was scared to tell her husband. She was embarrassed and felt like she failed.
Have faith, I kept in contact with Trish and her situation is working out! Thank you God!

 Let's talk money...

I can relate to Trish, and told her pretty much what I'm getting ready to tell you. In our house, I handle the bills/finances, also. (No, it's not a woman-gets-the-money-thing, silly.)  That's our system and that is how it works best for us. That wasn't our first system though, when we were buying the house it came to a situation that we needed a better system for bill paying; so here we are almost 2.5 years later and things have been good. Thank you Lord!
Nobody is perfect though! Who hasn't made a boo-boo with the bills???? I bet everyone has! As most people I know do, it's the time of year to wait for the tax return to help straighten out some things. Just like Trish, I had a day not to long ago where I hung my head as well; a lot of things happened in December. Let's be honest- who wants to worry about money around the holidays? Not me.
I take my responsibility of handling the finances seriously. I do it to relieve a burden from my husband. I failed. Not just my partner, but God. I prayed, "God, I cheated you. Show me what to do."

Steward?
"The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden
to work it and take care of it."  -Genesis 2:15
Webster says that a steward is someone who protects or is responsible for money and property; a person whose job is to manage the property of another person.
A steward is considered a trusted advisor. Someone who manages things for the master of the estate.
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."  -Genesis 1:1

First book, first chapter, first verse... It all belongs to God! My money, my gifts/talent, my time, my life, my mission, my child- everything that I am and that exists is because my God made it so. WE are the stewards. Nothing belongs to us- we are managing all things in this world for our King. Even the money. Think of yourself as a cashier; you are handling the money of your employer. That's the responsibility we are called to. Do you know what it is called when you steal money from your company? Embezzlement: theft of funds belonging to one's employer.

Managing the finances of your home is a responsibility bestowed by God. Ouch! Do you know the parable of the Bags of Gold (Matthew 25:14-30)?? A man entrusted his three servants with his wealth while he was gone. Two did well and one did not.
Verse 14: "Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them." Who are the servants? We are! Who is the man going on a journey? Christ. We have been entrusted with His wealth.  Do you know what I want to hear when I get to heaven? "Well done, good and faithful servant!" (Matthew 25:21, 23)
Each man was given a different amount of gold based on his ability to manage it. Some people prove to manage finances better than others. It seems presently that finances are a huge problem for everybody. Look at our country, one of the reasons America is a third-world country is because of our mass amount of debt. Do you see the common thread? When we are not taking care of things for our Master, but for ourselves we start dropping the ball. Trish is not alone. I am not alone. YOU are not alone. I have heard my share of couples argue about money over the years. We get caught up in "my money" and "their money" that we forget it is His money. We have to take those moments and refocus back to God. "God show me what to do." More than once while working on bills I have asked Him to bless and guide us. God never cheats us. We cheat Him. It is our duty to take the responsibility of handling the money seriously! We are human. Don't punish yourself horribly when you realize you have mismanaged something. Bend your head and ask Him for forgiveness and help. He will answer you!

Not just money...
Keep in mind that stewardship doesn't mean money alone, though. We are called to manage all of His property; our God given talents, our children, our jobs, the Good News, the environment, and the list goes on! People ask how God could let people starve. He doesn't- we do. We are mismanaging His resources.
"This, then, is how you out to regard us: as servants of Christ and as
those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed. Now it is required
that those who have been given trust must prove faithful."  -1 Corinthians 4:1-2

"Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has
been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and on the Holy Spirit, and
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."  -Matthew 28:18-20

God I ask that you forgive us our debts and how we have consciously and unconsciously mismanaged your property. We are flawed and human, and you love us past all that! Help me to be a steward you can be proud of Lord. Guide me in all ways for Your Kingdom! You provide all that is needed in this world. Thank you God! Amen.

"I will be careful to lead a blameless life
when will you come to me?
I will conduct the affairs of my house
    with a blameless heart.
I will not look with approval
    on anything that is vile.
I hate what faithless people do;
I will have no part in it."
-Psalm 101:2-3
